Londoner’s Diary: Old London Bridge

Michael Ellis

A line across Tooley Street marks the course of Old London Bridge, the medieval bridge that was torn down in 1823 and replaced with a construction by John Rennie (completed in 1831). In the late 1960s, Rennie’s bridge was sold, dismantled and shipped out to Arizona, where it forms a river crossing near Lake Havasu. The current London Bridge is by Mott, Hay and Anderson, and was completed in 1973.
